Prevention

There are ways to lower your risk of melanoma by avoiding being outdoors in intense sunlight too long and by practicing sun safety, even on cloudy or cool days. Ways of practicing sun safety.

Seek Shade

This is particularly important in the middle of the day between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., when the UV light is strongest.

If you must be outside, wear long sleeves, long pants, sunglasses, and a hat with a wide brim. Fabrics with a tight weave and dark colors generally provide the best protection.

Use sunscreen properly

The higher the SPF, the more sunburn protection is provided. Those with an SPF of 30 or higher provide the most protection against sunburn. Sunscreens should not be used to allow you to sit in the sun longer.

Sun screens will not prevent melanoma; it just reduces the amount of UV light exposure. Too much sun exposure is unhealthy. Sun screens should only be used to protect against normal sun exposure.

Wear sunglasses

Buy those with at least 99% UV absorption. Labels may read “UV absorption up to 400 nm,” which means that they protect 99%-100% of UV.

Avoid other sources of UV light

The use of tanning beds and sun lamps is hazardous because the UV radiation they deliver can damage your skin. Not using tanning beds and sun lamps is highly recommended. There is growing evidence that they may increase your risk of developing melanoma. This is an area of active research

Protect children from the sun

Children require special attention, especially since they tend to spend more time outdoors and can burn more easily. Use all the precautions mentioned above.

Identify abnormal moles and have them removed

When in doubt, have them checked out!
